Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in San Tan Valley, AZ

At Serenity Mental Health Centers, we understand the challenges posed by obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a mental illness characterized by obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. These symptoms can leave individuals feeling powerless. Our mission is to empower our San Tan Valley, AZ patients to regain control over their OCD tendencies, enabling them to lead more fulfilling lives. If you're struggling with the symptoms of OCD, know that help is just one phone call away.

Various treatment methods are available for managing OCD, catering to individual needs and preferences. While prescription medication remains the most conventional approach, alternative therapies such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine therapy are also offered at our facility.

When undesirable side effects arise from prescription medications, TMS and ketamine therapy offer effective alternatives. TMS utilizes magnetic pulses to noninvasively stimulate brain regions linked to OCD symptoms, while ketamine therapy, administered intravenously, is recognized for alleviating symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Regardless of the chosen treatment approach, our team is dedicated to supporting each patient in their journey to find the most effective solution for their needs.

OCD, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, is thought to arise from a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Research indicates that abnormalities in brain structure and function—particularly in areas that regulate anxiety and control impulses—may play a role in the development of OCD. A family history of OCD or other mental health disorders can also increase an individual’s risk.

Symptoms of OCD generally involve persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that lead to significant anxiety and result in repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to alleviate that anxiety. Common symptoms of OCD include:

Obsessions:

  • Fear of contamination or germs
  • Fear of harming oneself or others
  • Need for symmetry or order
  • Intrusive thoughts about violence or inappropriate behaviors

Compulsions:

  • Excessive hand-washing or cleaning
  • Repeated checking (e.g., doors, appliances)
  • Counting or arranging items in a specific order
  • Mental rituals (e.g., repeating phrases)

OCD can develop due to a variety of factors, including genetic, neurological, and environmental influences. While the exact cause remains unclear, certain risk factors can make an individual more likely to develop the condition:

  • Family history of OCD
  • Differences in brain structure and function
  • Exposure to stressful life events
  • Specific personality traits
  • Infections during childhood

I’ve had a wonderful experience with Serenity since 2019/2020. Prior to moving offices & seeing Marie, I completed TMS in the Gilbert office. My TMS treatment was 6 weeks & resulted in over 3 years medication free for anxiety and depression. To go from nearly 10 years of medication and nearly daily panic attacks to no panic and no meds was life changing for me. I now see Marie to keep up on my mental health and I love her calming presence. I also have two children 2 and under that I bring along with me everywhere - the office staff is always so sweet with them & always welcoming. 10/10.

OCD is diagnosed through a thorough assessment conducted by our board-certified psychiatrists. The diagnostic process typically includes a detailed interview, where we evaluate the individual’s symptoms, medical history, and overall well-being. During the evaluation, we look for signs of obsessions, which are persistent, unwanted thoughts, and compulsions, which are repetitive behaviors or mental actions performed to reduce anxiety. In some cases, additional questionnaires or rating scales may be used to measure symptom severity. This comprehensive evaluation helps ensure an accurate diagnosis and allows us to create a personalized treatment plan for the individual.
